Home & Studio

Formats & playback.

Video, audio, storage, and playback support for Home and Studio.

Older video and home cameras
MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4/DivX/Xvid, VC-1/WMV, Theora, older Flash video, DV, and ordinary Motion JPEG.
Containers and disc folders
MP4/M4V, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, supported MPEG/TS/MTS/M2TS formats, WMV, FLV, 3GP, and Blu-ray BDMV folders.
Music and general audio
MP3, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, Vorbis, Opus, WMA, WAV, AIFF/AIF/AIFC, and PCM.
Film and TV audio
AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS variants, TrueHD, LPCM, and MPEG audio. Output and channel preservation depend on the playback method and device.

Studio additions

Production and archival media.

Camera RAW
Blackmagic RAW (.braw) and RED REDCODE (.r3d), using Default playback in the native apps.
Editing and production
ProRes, DNxHD/DNxHR, CineForm, JPEG 2000, Hap, and the MXF container.
Specialized archives
FFV1, HuffYUV, Lagarith, Ut Video, SpeedHQ, QuickTime Animation, Apple Intermediate Codec, and supported uncompressed video.
ARRI sidecar metadata
Metadata associated with .ari and .arx files. This does not include ARRIRAW playback.

A MOV file can belong to either edition.

H.264 in MOV belongs in Home. ProRes in MOV requires Studio, including ProRes recorded on a personal camera. MOV, MKV, and AVI remain available in Home; the codec inside also matters.

Library connections by edition
Source Home Studio
Local folders & external drives Included Included
SMB/NAS Included Included
Native S3 connection Not included Included
Native Dropbox connection Not included Included

Home can read ordinary local folders synchronized by another application. Direct S3 and Dropbox connections are Studio features. Remote BRAW preparation may download the complete source to the Server; RED can use remote SDK reads.

Choose the playback method.

Default adapts the stream to the connection. Original preserves compatible source media through direct playback or remuxing.

Default
The Server decodes and streams media for the native Player. This is the supported path for BRAW and R3D on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac.
Original
Available in both editions for compatible media. Direct File and Remux HLS availability depend on the source, selected tracks, and device. BRAW and R3D cannot use Original.
Web and Apple Watch
Use supported playback paths for those clients. BRAW and R3D do not currently play in the browser or on Apple Watch.
4K, HDR, and surround
Included in both editions where the source, playback method, and device support them. These are not Studio-only features.

Studio audio monitoring

Listen to the stereo pair you need.

Left Only and Right Only send the selected side to both ears. Mono Mix combines the pair. Swap exchanges left and right.

Available during
Default playback, offline packages, and supported Direct File playback.
Not applied during
Remux HLS or external AirPlay video. Mono sources pass through unchanged.
Scope
Monitoring acts on the decoded stereo pair. It does not select arbitrary channels from the original multichannel source before downmixing. The setting resets for each new item.

Normal audio-track and language selection remains available in Home and Studio.
